cc-tapis PROJECT x NGV Melbourne
cc-tapis PROJECT supports Bethan Laura Wood’s Kaleidoscope-o-Rama installation at the 2023 NGV Triennial in Melbourne, for the MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission.
A multi-piece installation which explores the gender-related aspects of historical methods of acquiring and disseminating knowledge.
Encompassing a wide range of elements through the lens of a kaleidoscope, Kaleidoscope-o-Rama includes a unique spectrum of textiles, furniture pieces, scenography elements and a custom rug developed with cc-tapis PROJECT.
Designed to complement a 360-degree rotating bookcase, Bethan Laura Wood imagined a rug based on arrays of tessellated matched pages from her veneer “book blocks”. A nod to the power of textiles within “women’s work” and a reference to the desire for highly decorative oriental carpets during the regency period, which through advances in industrial weaving were being re interpreted by local manufacturers throughout Britain to allow the middle class to join the trend.
Kaleidoscope-o-Rama is part of the ongoing partnership between the NGV and MECCA’s social change movement M-POWER, which works to elevate women in art and design, inspiring new generations to pursue careers in the creative industries.
cc-tapis PROJECT worked with Bethan Laura Wood to develop this custom project, dying numerous colors by hand which were then handtufted by expert craftsman following Bethan’s kaleidoscopic design, pushing the boundaries in hand-craftsmanship.
