GOING BACK IN TIME AT MIDO CAFE
(美都餐室)
Nestled in the lively Yau Ma Tei district, Mido Cafe (美都餐室) offers a cozy retreat into the past. Untouched by time, this retro-style cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style diner) has been serving nostalgic local dishes since 1950. Beloved by generations of Hongkongers, it sits on Temple Street, exuding vintage charm with its checkered floors, neon signs, and retro decor.
The menu? Macaroni soup, toast with eggs, fried noodles Mido-style, and Hong Kong-style milk tea—a timeless taste of the city’s culinary heritage.
AUTHENTIC TOFU FA (FLOWER) AT KUNG WO DOU BUN CHONG
(公和荳品廠)
In the bustling Sham Shui Po district, a hidden gem awaits—Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong. This discreet eatery serves the beloved Tofu Fa (Flower) dessert, a silky-smooth tofu pudding that slides off the spoon, melting in your mouth. Served hot or cold, it’s a treat best enjoyed with a generous sprinkle of cane sugar.
QUIET TIME AT YAUMATEI TIN HAU TEMPLE
A stroll along Temple Street leads to the historic Tin Hau Temple, a testament to Hong Kong’s rich cultural and religious heritage. Built in 1862 and dedicated to Tin Hau, the Taoist goddess of the sea and protector of fishermen, this red-brick compound consists of five interconnected traditional Chinese buildings.
Whether you’re seeking divine protection or architectural eye candy, intricate wooden carvings, vibrant murals, and authentic Taoist rituals make this temple not just a spiritual hub, but also an inspiring spot for creatives, and British designers too.
TREASURE HUNTING AT SHAM SHUI PO
(深水埗区)
Once an industrial hub, Sham Shui Po has reinvented itself as a vibrant district buzzing with creativity. A paradise for craft enthusiasts, it boasts a kaleidoscope of colorful shops, quirky cafes, contemporary art spaces, and independent boutiques offering vintage textiles, accessories, and unique treasures.
For music lovers, the district is home to electronics stores and specialty shops like White Noise Records, where you’ll find an eclectic mix of vinyl and second-hand CDs featuring both Western and Asian classics.
