CC-TAPIS PRESENTS YABU PUSHELBERG’S NEW RUG COLLECTION TESSERA, IN THE FIRST MILANESE SHOW DEDICATED TO THE NORTH AMERICAN DESIGN STUDIO
cc-tapis and Yabu Pushelberg continue their creative journey, exploring the many facets of Indian craftsmanship with Tessera - a brand-new collection of hand- woven rugs. Tessera is showcased in cc-tapis’ showroom, marking the expansion of their ready-to-buy collection. Following on the heels of Yabu Pushelberg’s hand knotted rug collection Memento in 2023, cc-tapis and Yabu Pushelberg began branching into new production techniques, diving into the rich tapestry of culture and artistic expressions of northern India. “After Memento in 2023, our synergy with George and Glenn inspired us to explore new production techniques. We wanted to apply their creativity and aesthetic to the world of flatweaves and dhurries. Tessera enriches our ready-to-buy line, an accessible and curated collection of rugs available in selected sizes and colors. Yabu Pushelberg are helping us to open the world of contemporary design to a wider community. ” - explains Fabrizio Cantoni, co-founder and CEO of cc-tapis. Exploring how time can shape an object, the marks and signs it leaves and the resulting character it adds to an object, Yabu Pushelberg were inspired by Roman and Byzantine mosaic patterns, applying it to traditional dhurrie weaving techniques made on a horizontal loom. Their research and development led to the creation of a unique textile language and 3 rugs: Tessera Overlay, Tessera Offset and Tessera Outcropped. The Tessera collection will be unveiled on Thursday, February 27th, in a site-specific installation at the cc-tapis showroom, alongside the Memento collection, the first solo-show dedicated to Yabu Pushelberg in Milan.
Tessera expands the ongoing collaboration between Yabu Pushelberg and cc-tapis with a new collection of rugs celebrating Indian craftsmanship. As the name suggests, the collection takes inspiration from tesserae – the small, typically square pieces of stone, glass, or
ceramic that form the intricate mosaics adorning ancient temples and forums dating back to the 4th century BC. For this project, George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg looked to the past, drawing from the rich artistic heritage of the Roman and Byzantine empires. They reinterpreted ancient mosaic patterns into contemporary designs, meticulously handmade by Indian artisans using the traditional dhurrie weaving technique. “Tessera has metaphorical meanings in art, ancient Roman culture, and planetary geology, all linked by the concept of small, individual units contributing to a larger structure or pattern. Our modern interpretation of the form creates dynamic patterns that have interest with irregularity but also comforting consistency that can scale.” - explain Yabu Pushelberg
Memento: a collection of seven hand-knotted rugs produced by Tibetan artisans in the cc-tapis Atelier in Nepal, unveil memories through artisanal craftsmanship. A uniquely individual series of art-pieces for the floor bursting into hyperreal landscapes of ephemeral allegorical characters. Fleeting and familiar, the design of Memento weaves a portal from reality into a dream realm. Exploring the creative approach of both brands, each piece brings to life this in-between state, capturing monumental moments or the residual effects garnered from the past. Disorienting time and space, these recollections can be hyperreal in full technicolor or infinitely mysterious and allusive. They can be bent, reshaped, or exulted, vulnerable to be lost or forgotten in a distracting world. Memento creates a tapestry of personal narratives within each rug, transcribing Yabu Pushelberg’s memories and treasured moments with Himalayan wool. cc-tapis artisans combine both dyed and undyed materials in extremely delicate gradients, finished by hand to evoke the soft and undefined nostalgic moments which accumulate together to form the collection. A uniquely individual series of hand-knotted rugs, enhanced by their exacting knowledge of technique and flawless expertise. Memento aims to inspire through memory, while conjuring up new ones, yet to come.
