about the collection

Inspired by Bethan Gray’s iconic pattern of natural and irregular lines, which she has been exploring over the years applied to handcrafted furniture and ceramics, Inky Dhow interprets the designer’s expressive strokes in Himalayan wool and pure silk.

Intrigued by how the lines of her “dhow” pattern changes as it hits different surfaces, for each project Bethan Gray investigates the scale, materials and proportions of the object she is going to transform with her personal signature.

Created entirely by hand, using ink, calligraphy brushes and watercolor paper, the “dhow” pattern is made by wonderfully natural and irregular lines, visual mark-making illustrating the expressive hand of the designer, where each brushstroke varies in flow and width.

An expression translated by Tibetan weavers, who knot by knot recreate Gray’s strokes using Himalayan wool and pure silk. The result is a timeless and elegant design born through experimentation and collaboration.
